All anyone really needed to do was look at tech companies that had been in place for several years to realize that the stock prices were growing at alarming rates. But too many people were looking at the short term picture or to new start ups and thinking the sky was the limit. The only surprise with the market crash is how long it took to unfold.
As for nuclear, biological and chemical attacks, as long as nut jobs like Saddam Hussein, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong Il are pursuing these weapons this is always a threat. Civil unrest and the Social Security demise have been predicted for decades, so this is a safe bet as well. Natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, floods and such happen every year. As areas become more populated and material and labor costs increase, the damages from these will always increase. Yet another safe "prediction".
Of course as these things come up it is easy to argue that the prophet was correct because these "predictions" came or are coming true. It is kind of like psychics wining the lottery. If they were really able to predict the winning number, why did they need to buy several tickets? Because winning was just luck and the human mind is so good at adapting circumstance to fit a theory or desire.
Now before you dismiss me as an atheist or a nut job, I have complete faith in God, and his plan for me, what I don’t have faith in is the men of the cloth that use snake oil sales tactics to line their pockets. Men like Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Jesse Jackson and those before them who failed to hold themselves to the standards that they preached and begged forgiveness when they became "victims" of their own temptations. For me, I’d rather have a local preacher that I’ve grown up with, teaching from the bible under the shade of an old oak tree on a sunny day or inside a neighbors barn in inclement weather. Someone that isn’t expecting a multimillion dollar a year income or with aspirations of preaching to the world. Greed is a powerful temptation.
