Lemon Laws only apply to new vehicles within certain mileage/time constraints. In AZ, it’s 24,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first. There is also specific failure criteria that must be met.
You bought a used car from a private seller. Such sales as always "as is", meaning you have no recourse if the car fails, breaks down, catches fire, etc. The seller does not have to give you your money back, and you would have to sue him to do so. The chance of you winning the case would be very slim, as the law is already in his favor. It is the buter’s responsibility to determine the condition of a vehicle before buying it, especially when buying from a private seller. It is not the seller’s responsibility to do anything but accept your money and hand you the keys.
I don’t know why you contacted the police. It’s not a crime to sell someone a piece of junk. Let the buyer beware.
There is no return on any car new or used. The lemon law only covers new cars. The time to check out your car is before you buy it. From a private seller it is bought "as is" so there is no warranty. Only thing you can do is fix the problems and drive it or sell it or trade it in on another car. Those are your options……………..UJN
All private party sales are considered to be AS-IS unless there is a written agreement to the contrary. When you buy a car from a private party, it is your responsibility to have the vehicle checked prior to purchase. The seller sold you a car. You now own the car!
There is no right to return a car. There is no warranty on a private sale. Have the car towed to a reputable mechanic and have the repairs done, or junk the car. The seller is not required to do anything and has made it clear that they are not going to.
Sorry. It is a hard lesson to learn, but you need to have a vehicle checked PRIOR to purchase!
There actually are states which have Used Car Lemon Laws, however they are very strict. What state do you live in?
For almost every State, used car purchases sold by private seller are considered "As-Is" unless they provide some sort of written warranty. The only State I can think of that might qualify for you is Massachusetts. Otherwise, you can say the car broke, and the seller can say you broke it.
For the person who decided to give thumbs down, here is a link from the Massachusetts Government website:
Private Party Sales:
The Used Vehicle Warranty Law applies differently to a vehicle purchased from a private party than it does if purchased from a dealer. Under the law, a dealer is anyone who sells four or more vehicles in a 12 month period.
The Used Vehicle Warranty Law requires private party sellers to inform buyers about any and all known defects which impair the safety or substantially impair the use of the vehicle. The law applies to all private party sales regardless of sales price or mileage. If you discover a defect that impairs the vehicle’s safety or substantially impairs the use, and can prove that the seller knew about the defect but failed to disclose it, you may cancel the sale within thirty days of purchase. The seller must refund the amount you paid for the vehicle, less 15 cents per mile of use.

Usually when you buy it from a private seller it is "as is". You should have it checked out by a trusted mechanic. Never heard of the certain amount of time return unless you have something it writing stating that. I think you are stuck.
I don’t know where you live, but here in New York, the lemon law when purchasing any car applies for i believe ninety days, but maybe more like thirty or sixty. either way, if u just bought the car this past weekend then the man needs to take it back. If that surprisingly unhelpful police man doesnt know, then i would suggest visiting this website http://www.carlemon.com/lemonstat.html which has each states lemon law and people to contact for help. Without more information, i cant really help you because there are mileage and year restrictions applied which are different for every state. Do your research and i wish you the best of luck with your problem.
