you cant do that as you have to sign up for a two year iphone contract with at&t before leaving the store. you cant just buy it.
You can not use an iphone on a prepaid account. at&t will catch you and block your account until you use another phone. All iphones are required to be on a postpaid account no exceptions. You also run several risks with unlocking the phone. You can accidental brick the phone and make it useless or get a virus. My honest opinion is to sell the iphone and go get yourself an itouch.
