Let this be a good lesson to your brother-in-law! Next time, never buy a used car that says "sold as is" or with very limited warranty without checking out the car for yourself or with aid of a trusted mechanic. Always remember that sales people are usually out to sell and will attempt to sell anything they can for the commission!

To the best of my knowledge, there are NO "lemon laws" in MEXICO. It doesn’t matter where the car is licensed – only where you PURCHASED it…

Every state has different lemon laws. I think if you bought the car used and it has over 100,000 miles, you don’t have a leg to stand on. You said you bought the car in Mexico though….I would think that cancels American law?

If he bought the car in Mexico, he probably has no lemon law rights. If the sale had been in Texas, he might have some rights, but they may be limited by many factors, like the mileage or any written or implied warranties. The biggest problem is having purcahsed it in Mexico where I assume the dealer does a lot of business to avois the Texas lemon laws.
