If you are considering donor insemination you really should have a look at the materials produced by the Donor Conception Network. They give great advice to anyone thinking of going down this route. http://www.donor-conception-network.org/
(Look for the free down loads, Planning a family leaflets, Letters from Walter and Olivia)
You should also seek some counseling to make sure it is the best thing for you both.

My personal feeling would be to try a reversal, as if you don’t you might regret not trying. I’d also get them to do some surgical sperm extraction while they did it so that you would have the option of IVF (ICSI) if the reversal didn’t work and then you did decide you wanted your partners genetic offspring.
Donor insemination is a great option and far less invasive and much less expensive but you have to be sure it’s what you both want.

At 47 your partner is not at the height of sperm production but it’s by no means the end either!

At 47, he’s too old to produce enough healthy sperm. The older you get, the crappier your body works. His sperm is more likely to cause something to go wrong with the baby. Go with a donor. Anyway, if he gets a vasectomy reversal, wouldn’t you eventually have to reverse THAT?

Umm, it is not really a good plan to use his sperm. The chances of a successful reversal are next to none. You will just be putting him though a lot of unnecessary pain.

Have you really thought this though? He is going to have a teenage child in the house when he is 65! This is not a good plan. I know others that have done so. They are not very happy.
